MCIU is proud to partner with The Professional Development Institute (PDI) to bring intensive study in a variety of courses. Taking PDI courses through MCIU will allow you to deepen your learning as well as earn Pennsylvania Act 48 hours.

Do you wish you had an appropriate and engaging way to address social and emotional issues? Do you like to use authentic literature in your classroom teaching? SEL is a process for learning essential life skills such as decision making, problem solving, effective communication, empathy, perseverance, and coping, just to name a few. Teachers are searching for the most effective ways to introduce and teach appropriate social and emotional skills in the classroom as they relate to sensitive issues, many of which are beyond their control. This course provides the perfect approach by using high-quality literature to deal with sensitive issues from tattling and appropriately developing friendships, to depression, stress and anxiety, bullying, substance abuse, and others. Teachers will be provided with thorough background information on each topic, as well as the implications for the classroom environment and teaching. Then, a minimum of two books are shared for each topic along with three to five lesson plans for each title. The course introduces lesson plans for over twenty chapter books and thirteen picture books. An additional list of picture books and novels are shared for every single social and emotional topic presented in the course.

Intended Audience: Grades 3-12 Classroom Teachers, Special Education Teachers, Administrators

Graduate Credits are available. The Professional Development Institute, in association with the prestigious University of California San Diego Extension, offers graduate level credit for all PDI online courses. Each PDI course is worth 3 and 1/3 semester units of credit which is equivalent to 5 quarter units of credit (50 hours of training). After registration into the PDI course, participants will receive an email with a link to register for credit at a special negotiated rate of $184 (per course) for teachers served by the MCIU. Registering for university credit is OPTIONAL. Credit from UCSD Extension is typically used for credential renewal and/or salary advancement.

-Course drops or changes made within 48 hours of being given course access by PDI will be processed at no charge. No PDI refunds or course changes will be allowed after 48 hours. All coursework must be completed by June 30th. Extensions to complete courses beyond June 30th will not be granted.
-Following your enrollment in this Professional Development Institute course through the MCIU, you will receive a detailed email from PDI including your course access within two weeks of this registration. This message will come from PDI Program Specialist Samantha Moore at samantha@webteaching.com. If you have additional questions, please contact our registrar, Lisa Cullen, at lcullen@mciu.org.

ABA Bundle: Essentials for Living, Discrete Trial Teaching, and Competent Learner Model
This is a self paced course with rolling open enrollment available until January 10th.

This bundle consists of 3 sessions that will be awarded 6 hours for Act 48 credit.

Essentials for Living

Essentials for Living (EFL) is a curriculum based on functional skills. EFL utilizes the principles of Applied Behavioral Analysis as well as Skinner's verbal operants. EFL is meant to support the most complex learners in your program as well as learners who no longer make progress in other ABA-based programs.

What is Discrete Trial Teaching

Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT) is a research based practice paired with Applied Behavioral Analysis strategies. DTT employs errorless teaching with error correction. Programs implementing DTT often use the VB-MAPP to assess and teach students specific skills. This course will review DTT, errorless teaching, as well as the VB-MAPP. Furthermore, level of professional development and coaching support will be discussed as well.

Competent Learner Model (CLM)
The Competent Learner Model is supplemental curriculum based in research practices such as direct instruction, verbal behavior, and applied behavioral analysis. Through CLM, learners engage in 7 dynamic repertoires that are tied to Skinner's verbal operants. Assessment, curriculum, and professional development are discussed in this overview of CLM.
