MCIU has partnered with Grassroots Workshops to report Act 48 continuing professional education credits for Pennsylvania educators. The actual workshop registration takes place through Grassroots Workshops this registration and payment is for Act 48 credit reporting only.
Grassroots Workshops will provide a Certificate of Completion directly to participants upon workshop completion. All participants are responsible for forwarding their Certificate of Completion to courses@mciu.org within 30 days of workshop completion to have their Act 48 reported to the state. The number of hours awarded will be determined based on the number of hours verified by Grassroots Workshops. This session will be a combination asynchronous online learning and 8- 1.5 hour synchronous virtual sessions. Dates for the synchronous sessions will determined at a later date. An informational kick off will be held on August 30th at 4:00pm. The course will kick off in early October. Registration will close on September 8, 2023.
As we know, teachers matter more to student achievement than any other aspect of schooling. LETRS® is a professional development course that supports teachers as they bridge research into practice and is applicable to any classroom regardless of the literacy program in use. This professional development opportunity provides educators with the background, depth of knowledge, and tools to teach language and literacy skills to every student that enters their classroom. This year we will be offering Volume 2: Units 4-8 which focuses on language comprehension. The units include The Mighty Word: Oral Language and Vocabulary, Digging for Meaning: Understanding Reading Comprehension, Text-Driven Comprehension Instruction, and The Reading-Writing Connection. We understand the need for alternative ways to engage in professional learning and our Volume 2 2023-24 cohort will engage in asynchronous online learning, classroom application, and 8 synchronous 1.5-hour professional development sessions offered during the evening. This is a blended course with both synchronous and asynchronous learning components.
The purpose of this group is to: -Develop a community of readers and build relationships across the region -Increase exposure to newer, diverse and inclusive books -Evaluate and provide feedback on texts for middle grade and middle school levels -Curate a list of resources for district/school/classroom curriculum and instruction. The book list was created in partnership with MCIU, local school librarians and teachers. Participants are responsible for acquiring the required three books. Required texts include: 1-A Seed in the Sun 2-A Wish in the Dark 3- What about Will with additional short professional texts provided. The expectation is that participants will come to the meet-ups having read their book and professional short text ready to discuss the texts and provide feedback using a protocol. In the virtual meet-up, participants will rotate through breakout sessions with colleagues. A protocol will be used to support the conversation and drive feedback on each text. A facilitator will be in breakout rooms for support. The group is open to all school educators. This group is committed to offering restorative and inclusive curriculum and instruction resources and working toward healing our historically marginalized communities. Synchronous, virtual meetings will take place from 4:00pm-5:30pm on November 8th, February 7th, and April 10th.
